Study on the Identification of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen and Its Commonly Confused Species


Purpose

  • Ziziphi Spinosae Semen is a commonly used tranquillizing Chinese Materia Medica (CMM) and is also commonly formulated in proprietary Chinese medicines as one of the active ingredients. The demand of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen in the market is high, and also it is easily confused with other CMM which are originated from seeds or fruits. In this connection, the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute embarks a project named “Study on the Identification of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen and Its Commonly Confused Species” which employs simple and practicable methods to differentiate Ziziphi Spinosae Semen and its commonly confused species in Hong Kong market.

Method

  • This project employs macroscopic and microscopic methods to differentiate Ziziphi Spinosae Semen and its commonly confused species.

Characteristics of the project

  • make use of simple and practical methods;
  • illustrate by comparing the differentiating characteristics of the easily confused pairs of CMMs.
