Introduction

The “Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China” is a nation-wide campaign aimed at promoting the extensive and scientific use of traditional Chinese medicine. Launched in 2007, the campaign has instilled the knowledge of health and culture of Chinese medicine through various activities across the Mainland. It becomes a window for showcasing fine traditional culture and also a platform for spreading the knowledge of Chinese medicine.

In the past ten years, the campaign has covered more than 30 provinces, districts and autonomous regions in the Mainland, including the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. More than 1.6 million people participated directly in over 300 activities, crowning it the largest Chinese medicine education and promotion campaign ever organised. The campaign has greatly enhanced the widespread promotion of the culture and scientific understanding of Chinese medicine. Hong Kong joined phase 1 of the campaign in 2007 and hosted a series of local events. Given the increasing impact of Chinese medicine on the society, phase 3 of the campaign was launched in the Mainland in 2017. With the overarching theme of “spreading the culture of Chinese Medicine and enhancing the health of people”, a spectrum of activities has been organised to mix the concept, knowledge, practice and products of Chinese medicine into school education and the healthy life style of community.

In October 2018, the campaign returns to Hong Kong. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Mainland, the Food and Health Bureau and the Department of Health of Hong Kong will organize the “Promotion of Chinese Medicine in China – Hong Kong Programme”. Running from 25 October to 31 December 2018, hundreds of activities, supported by the Hospital Authority and co-organised by schools of Chinese medicine of three local universities and organisations in the traditional Chinese medicine sector, will be available for free participation of the general public and Chinese medicine related parties.
